Police seize weapons readied for gang fights from Hithadhoo

Police, in an operation launched to combat heightened gang violence in Addu City, have seized items believed to have been readied to be used as weapons in fights from Hithadhoo district.

The operation, launched on Sunday, is carried out collaboratively by officers from Addu City’s police stations, South Police Serious Crime Cell and Specialist Operations.

Items believed to have been readied to be used in fights that were seized include sharp-edged weapons and metal rods among other things.

A total of 10 suspects have been arrested throughout the operation to date; an 18-year-old, two 19-year-olds, three 20-year-olds, a 21-year-old and three 23-year-olds.

They were arrested in connection to two gang fights; one which took place on Friday night and the other which took place on Sunday evening.

A 30-year-old man was seriously injured in Friday’s gang fight while a 20-year-old was seriously injured in Sunday’s fight. Both of them have been transferred to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in capital Male' for further treatment. 

All 10 suspects who were arrested in connection to the fights have been remanded in custody pending the outcome of their trials by Hithadhoo Magistrate Court.

Both fights are under investigation by Addu City’s police stations and South Police Serious Crime cell.
