Ibrahim Shareef (Kelaa Iburey), the incumbent Kelaa MP, has been elected as the deputy leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s parliamentary group.

He ran against Feydhoo MP Mohamed Nihad.

Shareef won with 27 votes, while Nihad received 23 votes.

50 MPs from MDP – which holds a majority at the Parliament – took part in the vote.

Central Fuvahmulah MP Hussain Mohamed Didi had also initially planned on contesting for the position, but later withdrew his name.

The position had fallen vacant after Alifushi MP Mohamed Rasheed (Bigey) was elected as the MDP’s PG leader, after the party’s top lawmaker was elected as the Parliament’s speaker.
