The Parliament has rejected an amendment submitted by the Democrats to expedite a constitutional referendum on a change in the system of governance.

The bill submitted by North Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahmy sought to amend the constitution in order to eliminate the need for a second referendum if a revision is being made to relevant laws after a referendum is held on the system of governance.

The bill was submitted in September, after the first round of the presidential election.

The bill was called to vote on Tuesday.

It was rejected with a majority vote of 44-12.

Meanwhile, the Parliament also called to vote the companies bill submitted by the government, seeking to replace the current Companies Act, which was enacted some 25 years ago.

The bill passed with a majority vote of 53-1.
