Azim is reportedly set to file his candidacy on Thursday.

Former defense minister Mariya Ahmed Didi was quick to endorse Azim. In a post on X on Wednesday, said she believes Azim is the most suited for the most.

“I believe he is most suited for the post and I fully endorse him. He is a “can do” man with a positive attitude. I look forward to working in his Campaign and wish him all the best!” she said.

Azim has yet to make an official comment regarding his candidacy.

Azim, the younger brother of Maldives National Party (MNP) leader and Dhangethi MP Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim, had headed projects worth millions run by the former administration to fulfil its electoral pledges.

He also previously headed the State Trading Organization (STO) and Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC).

Azim is expected to run in the MDP primary against former sports minister Ahmed Mahloof, who announced his candidacy in October.

The by-election to pick the new Male’ City mayor – a position which became vacant after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu resigned to take office as the Maldivian president – will be held on January 13.
