Muizzu wants 2024 budget capped at MVR 49bn

President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu wants to have next year’s projected state budget capped at MVR 49 billion, according to Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, PPM’s deputy leader and member of the incoming president’s budget committee.

In an interview to SanguTV on Monday, Ghassan said that the incoming president’s top priority is to ensure next year’s budget falls in line with standards acceptable to international financial and credit rating agencies.

“The Office of the President-elect has asked to maintain the budget at MVR 49 billion. That was the very first decision President [Muizzu] made,” he said.

Ghassan added that the incoming administration will inherit some of the works of the outgoing administration.

He said that the MVR 200 million supplementary budget was submitted to deliver Muizzu’s pledges for his first 100 days in office.

Ghassan said the Finance Ministry is providing its full cooperation in drafting the budget.

He said that while all state and government institutions have been cooperative towards transitional committees, overall, some institutions have been fully cooperative in disclosing all information.

“We were well aware this would happen. President [Muizzu] himself was fully aware,” he said.

Muizzu will take office on November 17.
