Over 500 people apply for waiver of traffic fines

Transport Ministry states over 500 individuals have applied for waiver of traffic fines so far.

State Minister for Transport Ali Solih told Sun on Wednesday that the number is expected to increase significantly in the coming days.

The Transport Ministry announced on Monday that people will need to complete a 20-hour training conducted by the police regarding traffic rules and social issues in order to be eligible for the fine waiver. Interested individuals can apply for the training via Transport Ministry’s SIMS portal until October 25.

Ali Solih said the Ministry is unable to state when the training can be held at this time.

He detailed the purpose of the training as an important step towards raising awareness among traffic offenders so they may not repeat such offenses.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced his decision earlier this month to waive all outstanding traffic fines between November 17, 2018 and September 5, 2023.

The fines that can be waived include license-related fines, driving violations-related fines, fines incurred driving a vehicle without registrations and stickers of the respective vehicle and taxi-related fines.
