Dengue cases see a significant drop in September compared to August

Statistics from the Health Ministry show a significant drop in the number of dengue cases reported in September compared to August.

As per the statistics, 155 dengue cases have been reported so far in September. A total of 327 dengue cases were reported in August.

The greatest number of dengue cases in 2023 have been reported from Hulhumale’.

In this regard, 371 cases were reported from Hulhumale’.

Other regions reporting high numbers of dengue cases include;

• Addu City with 369 cases
• Laamu Atoll with 297 cases
• Raa Atoll with 270 cases

Two natives of HA. Kelaa, residing in Male’ City, passed away mid-treatment for dengue last Saturday.

Dengue, a mosquito-borne disease, is transmitted by several species of female mosquitoes of the Aedes genus, principally Aedes aegypti.

Symptoms typically start three to fourteen days after infection which may include fever, headache, vomiting and muscle and joint pains.

In a small proportion of cases, the disease develops into a more severe dengue hemorrhagic fever, causing bleeding, low levels of blood platelets and blood plasma leakage, or into dengue shock syndrome, where dangerously low blood pressure occurs.
