Health Protection Agency (HPA), on Wednesday, advised exercising further caution in light of the concerning number of dengue cases.

In a statement released earlier today, HPA said that an increase in dengue cases is observed annually during the rainy season.

Underscoring increased monsoon rain this year, presently still experiencing – HPA stressed on increased possibilities of mosquitoes breeding in large quantities.

HPA said that dengue is spread through Aedes species of mosquito, which breeds in clear water. Therewith, they have urged the public to exercise further caution in protecting themselves against the disease.

HPA advised to cover as much as possible, to make use of mosquito repellent, and to keep doors and windows closed early morning and, in the evening, as preventative measures. Moreover, they advised not to discard items like cans that can retain water on streets and home premises.

Home remedies suggested by HPA for those contracting dengue included drinking more fluids, resting, and taking paracetamol. They have also advised consulting a doctor if the fever exceeds three days, is unable to take fluids, or feels too weak.

Statistics by HPA show an increase in dengue cases since April. The number of hospital admissions, and transfers from islands to Male’ City for further treatment with respect to patients with dengue have also spiked.

In October alone, Maldives recorded four dengue-related deaths. Two out of the four deaths were on Tuesday; a nine-year-old girl and a 21-year-old man.

Last week's Tuesday, a 19-year-old youth who was being treated at ADK Hospital for dengue also succumbed to the disease. A day before that, an 8-year-old girl passed away whilst being treated for dengue.
