Muizzu pledges to introduce nationalism as separate subject

The opposition PPM-PNC’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu pledged to introduce nationalism as a separate subject in the school curriculum on Monday, stressing the need to nurture the spirit of patriotism among the country’s youth.

In a campaign rally in Hulhumale’ on Monday, Muizzu stressed the need to nurture the spirit of nationalism within the hearts of children.

He said he plans on introducing nationalism as a separate subject for school students if he is elected to office.

“We need to nurture the spirit of nationalism within the hearts of our children. I propose introducing a subject that teaches nationalism and upbringing in the school curriculum,” he said.

Muizzu said that Maldivian children must grow up with a love for Islamic faith and the Dhivehi language, and be well-versed in the country’s history, culture and customs, and must learn respect.

He said the country “cannot breathe a sigh of relief” until its youth are shaped based on such principles.

He said that no matter how great the development, the country will not learn peace until societal bonds are strengthened.

Muizzu added that his foreign policy will not allow for hostilities against any foreign country, and that he will foster close relations will all of Maldives’ bilateral partners.

But it will be a “firm no” to anything that endangers this country’s independence, he said.

“Our foreign policy will not be hostile towards any country. But if there’s anything that endangers our independence, it’s a firm no. We will solve anything that endangers this using on the principles of diplomacy, and bring peace to this country,” he said.

Muizzu said he believes all countries will respect Maldives’ independence and sovereignty.
