President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has decided to introduce an additional 35 percent allowance into the pay of local council workers.

The decision was announced by President’s Office spokesperson Miuvaan Mohamed in a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Miuvaan, the president made the decision to align the pay of civil servants at local council with the civil servants at government ministries – who began receiving the 30 percent allowance in May.

Council workers will begin receiving the allowance on October 1.

The President’s Office says the move will eliminate the pay gap between civil servants at local councils, and the rest of the civil servants, working in other government institutions.

The issue of the pay gap between council workers and other civil servants had been raised to the president during recent visits to islands.

He had promised to resolve the issue.
