Alhan Fahmy re-joins MDP

Alhan Fahmy, who had served as the deputy leader of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) back in 2011, has re-joined the party.

He rejoined the main ruling party during a campaign rally in Male’ City on Wednesday night.

At the rally, the former lawmaker blamed MDP’s former leader, Mohamed Nasheed for his decision to leave the party.

He criticized the former Maldivian president, describing him as “power hungry.”

He described the MDP members who left the party to join Nasheed’s The Democrats as “traitors to the nation.”

“Anyone leaving MDP at such a critical time is a huge betrayal to this country,” he said.

Alhan began his political career with the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), during the last days of former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s administration.

He later worked at the MDP, the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), and the Jumhoory Party (JP).

In 2019, he unsuccessfully contested for the North Henveiru parliamentary seat on behalf of JP. However, he lost the seat to MDP’s candidate – Ibrahim Muizzu.

Alhan’s business, King Capital Holdings, has been under investigation by the police since May 2022, on allegations of running a Ponzi scheme.

The court issued a travel ban order against him in the case on August 26.
