Boat carrying 13 sinks off Dharavandhoo

A cargo boat carrying 13 people capsized off the coast of B. Dharavandhoo on Thursday, as it travelled from Male’ to B. Atoll.

The incident was reported to the police at around 10:40 am Thursday.

A police spokesperson said the boat was a cargo vessel, and had been travelling with 13 people; 12 foreign nationals and one Maldivian.

All 13 have been rescued.

“All the people on the boat have been rescued and taken aboard a police speedboat. They are all safe,” said the spokesperson.

The police have not commented on the reason why the boat sank.

The quantity or type of cargo the boat had been carrying is also unclear at this point.
