Four people have been provided temporary accommodation following the fire which burned down a years-old convenience store in Male’ City on Wednesday, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

The three-story Vega Point, located in the Raiyvilla Goalhi, in the Galolhu district of Male’ City, burned down in a fire on early Wednesday, with MVR 3.7 million in merchandise, and 15 motorcycles parked outside, in the street.

An official from the NDMA said on Thursday that the authority has begun demolishing the building.

Living in the building next door has been deemed unsafe with the demolishing work in progress, and the four people living there have been provided temporary accommodation elsewhere.

The NDMA official identified them as; two Maldivian males and two Maldivian females.

They had been living in two separate floors in the building next door.

Opened in the early 1980s, Vega Point was one of the most popular convenience stores in Male’ at the time.

The store later expanded to a wholesale and retail business, importing some of its products directly from China.

The cause of the fire is unclear at this point.
