President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Tuesday, has waived all parking fines that have not been settled to date.

The spokesperson of the President’s Office Miuvaan Mohamed said the president made the decision in consideration of various aspects.

In this regard, he underscored increased complaints received from the public over the issuance of parking stickers, adding to existing parking fines, despite the lack of adequate parking space in Male’ City; an issue which the spokesperson said the president and the government acknowledges.

In addition to this, he said the decision was also made to provide easements for the public in light of the financial changes to lifestyles prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic that delayed the payment of the fines, which has been even further increased by new ones.

Miuvaan also detailed that the president had noted there were youths, fined during the local council election campaign, for driving without a license, who have been unable to settle their fines.

In this trajectory, Miuvaan said the government has established a regulation where traffic violation fines, apart from parking fines, can be waived in some circumstances subject to the completion of the training program.

President Solih, at the commencement of his term, had waived all existing parking fines back then. One of his electoral pledges for the first term had been to refrain from issuing parking stickers without allocating adequate parking space.
