The opposition PPM-PNC presidential candidate, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to build AA. Atoll’s first airport in the Mathiveri lagoon.
He made the pledge during a campaign rally in Mathiveri on Tuesday.
Addressing the rally, Muizzu stressed the need to develop the economy and create more jobs in the region.
Muizzu said that the AA. Atoll has the greatest opportunities for tourism, out of any other atoll in the Maldives.
“Tourism needs to further expand in this region. Our policy will be to develop more resorts, and facilitate greater opportunities for tourism, including in this region,” he said.
Muizzu said that the region needs an airport for that, and pledged to develop one in the Mathiveri lagoon.
He promised to expedite the project.
“This island suffers a shortage of land. We need to reclaim land. The land reclamation project will be conducted to accommodate not just the airport, but also for housing and space for industrial work the island needs for its future,” he said.
Muizzu said the people want the return of the development former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom brought to the Maldives.
He said that he entered the presidential race “with a clean heart” and the desire to serve the people.
AA. Atoll is currently one of the few atolls in Maldives that lacks an airport.
