President Solih and Muizzu both visit Kurendhoo

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (L) and Dr. Mohamed Muizzu (R) visit Lh. Kurendhoo on August 31, 2023.

On Thursday, Lh. Kurendhoo experienced a “political Eid”, as both President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who is facing re-election, and Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, his rival candidate from the opposition PPM-PNC coalition, both visited the island at the same time.

Though the candidates of the two biggest political parties visited Kurendhoo at the same time, they both adhered to elections regulations, and held their rallies in opposing ends of the island.

There were no clashes between supporters of the two candidates.

Elections regulations stipulate that rival candidates cannot conduct campaign activities in the same place, at the same time.

President Solih’s visit to Kurendhoo was his second stop in his tour of his home atoll on Thursday. He arrived in the island in the afternoon and was greeted by a large crowd of supporters.

Muizzu, the mayor of Male’ City, also arrived in the island in the afternoon. He, too, was greeted by a large crowd of supporters.

Though the two candidates arrived in Kurendhoo at the same time, they held their campaign activities in opposing ends of the island.

Earlier this week, both Muizzu and JP’s leader and presidential candidate Qasim Ibrahim had also held campaigns in the same island, R. Dhuvaafaru. The campaigns went smoothly, with no clashes between supporters.
