A long wait’s end: People mark their land, receive registry

The recipients of land from the greater Male’ area under the ‘Binveriya’ scheme, have begun signing their agreements, and receiving their land plots.

The signing of agreements began at the Hulhumale’ Synthetic Track area on Sunday evening.

 30 people received their land registry on Sunday.

After the signing of the agreement, recipients were taken to the area where they were allocated land, and marked the boundary of their plots.

State Minister for Housing, Akram Kamaluddin told reporters that many people were under the misconception that the land issued on Sunday were “sold”.

He said that it was simply untrue.

“We are handing over the registry after allocating land plots. We began this process today. Land plots will be marked each day, from both Gulhifalhu and Giraavaru as well,” he said.

Akram said that the land registries given to recipients are valid.

“These registries are legally sound. There’s no room for questions. We are registering in accordance with the agreement. They are notarized by lawyers,” he said.

AN END TO A LONG WAIT

People who received their registry on Sunday described it as an end to a long wait.

“Today marks the end to a years-long wait. Governments make promises of flats and land every time. But some condition is unmet each time,” said one recipient.

He said that he submitted the same documents for the ‘Binveriya’ scheme.

“We hadn’t gotten any land, since back in our father’s time. We have been living a hard life. I believe this marks a new dawn in Maldivian history,” he said.

18,955 people are eligible for land under the ‘Binveriya’ scheme. Total 9,003 plots will be issued from Hulhumale’, Gulhifalhu and Giraavarufalhu.
