Opposition PPM-PNC coalition’s presidential candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, citing the importance of the existence of an airport in Sh. Milandhoo, has pledged to develop an airport on the island if elected president.
Muizzu, on a visit to Milandhoo, as part of his ongoing campaign tour of atolls, said the island needed multiple projects for its development.
He added that he had the same developmental vision as the imprisoned opposition leader, former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom.
Muizzu underscored Yameen’s policy with respect to infrastructural development; the establishment of airports across the nation, so that one is accessible from all islands within 30 minutes travel time.
On this note, he said although Funadhoo in Shaviyani Atoll had an airport, it was not accessible within 30 minutes of travel time for residents of Narudhoo and Feevah, in Milandhoo constituency.
He stressed that the geographical formation of Shaviyani Atoll particularly posed various difficulties in transportation.
Therefore, he pledged to develop an airport in Milandhoo, no matter what.
“By the will of God, we will do that for you. However, I do not see an island nearby this one that is suitable for developing a resort,” he said.
Nevertheless, Muizzu pledged the development of additional airports and resorts in Shaviyani Atoll.
He detailed that all these airports will be feasible once tourism in the region is boosted and the bed capacity is increased. Muizzu added that enhancing tourism in Shaviyani Atoll was included in his economic plan.
The opposition coalition’s presidential candidate also pledged to develop Milandhoo roads and build an Islamic centre and a good quality youth centre.
During Muizzu’s earliest visit to Komandoo on Wednesday, he pledged to develop an airport in the three islands linked to Komandoo, Medhurah, Mairah and Dhigurah (Dhiguvelidhoo).
