PPM and PNC’s presidential candidate, Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said today that he will build an airport near Sh. Komadoo on the three connected islands, Sh. Medhurah, Sh. Mairah, and Sh. Dhigurah (Dhiguvelidhoo).
Visiting Komandoo as part of his campaign visits to the islands, Muizzu said that even if thinking geographically, an airport being in that area is very important.
“What I assure you is the (Dhiguvelidhoo) airport project and that a plan to bring tourism with it will be carried out,” Muizzu said.
He also criticised the land reclamation project that is to join Mathi Komandoo and Komandoo that the government has entrusted to MTCC, and highlighted the slow pace at which the project is progressing.
“This is not a speed the people want. The people want development to come at a very fast pace,” Muizzu said.
He said that that would not be the case in his presidency and that the services to people will be hastened. He also said that he will prioritise doing things how the people want.
Muizzu said the project will expand health services and will bring many benefits to youth and the education system.
“God willing, we will bring results should the people give us the opportunity,” he said.
The government suddenly added Dhiguvelidhoo to the list of islands opened for resort development during the campaign for the by-election in the Komandoo constituency. At the time, former President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom had pledged to build an airport in the island chain under the PPM government.
In his campaign this year, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has pledged that he will build an airport in Kudafaru near Komandoo if he gets elected for a second term.
