President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Tuesday, has pledged to link GDh. Gadhdhoo with the nearby uninhabited island, Gan, if elected for a second term in office.

He announced the pledge during a campaign rally held at Gadhdhoo on Tuesday night, where he also shared other electoral pledges for the island.

However, he did not disclose any further details regarding how the islands will be linked.

Additional pledges made for Gadhdhoo:

  • Laying asphalt on all roads under the second phase of the island’s road development project
  • Building 100 row houses after reclaiming 30 hectares of land
  • Building a new polytechnic centre

President Solih, speaking at the rally, said scenes witnessed this time around as the election nears, are very different from previously held elections.

In this regard, he detailed that from 2008, till now, the vote was cast to change the incumbent president at the time of each election for which opposition parties form a coalition to achieve this.

“However, I see a difference this year, in 2023. If yearning to change whoever is president, all others take the same side. They say the same things. Because they are aware it cannot be achieved any other way, they choose to be on the same side as they wish not to take the risk,” he said.

On the contrary, the president said a coalition, this time, has only been formed by the governing party, while all opposition parties have failed in this trajectory.

“It is different this time. Those who are in power, have formed a coalition this time. There is no one to back anyone else in this election,” he said.

Nevertheless, he said candidates contesting in the election are very seriously campaigning.

The president further stated that MDP, faced the 2018’s election, with a manifesto.

While the party has a manifesto for this election as well, President Solih said his opponents’ manifestos will be “cannot achieve this”.

“This time even, the manifesto of our opponents will be trying to prove our pledges cannot be fulfilled,” he said.
