Former president Dr. Waheed Hassan Manik, on Friday, remarked that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih campaigning without ‘freeing’ jailed opposition leader, PPM’s presidential candidate, former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom was ‘not fair’.

Speaking to the press near Supreme Court, Waheed said rumors of influencing the judiciary is now evidently unfolding to be true in front of the people and the whole nation at present.

Waheed, underscoring Maldives follows a democratic system, stressed the importance of the opportunity to hold a multiparty election.

“Therefore, what I have to say is, to allow the election to proceed fairly. It is not fair that the president is campaigning after closing the doors for multiparty contention,” he said.

He further said that President Solih will be competing on an equal platform if he was truly courageous.

“Maldivian citizens will not stand still. Maldivian citizens will not stand still to watch if things are astray from justice,” he added.

Yameen’s candidacy appeal is presently ongoing at the Supreme Court. Male’ City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has been awarded PPM’s coalition partner, PNC’s presidential ticket, as a backup candidate for the coalition in case Supreme Court does not overturn Elections Commission’s decision to reject his candidacy form.
