The Maldives Center for Policy Studies (MCPS) has announced its decision to conduct academic research in four different areas, including foreign policy.

At Saturday's MCPS press conference, its board member and former Attorney General Azima Shakoor said the areas of research by the institution this year include education sector, foreign policy, population demographics, and social equity.

Member of the MCPS and former president, Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan, said the responsibilities of intellects in societies are crucial. He added that every government spends significantly on education and noted the importance of academic experts getting more involved with societal issues.

"Improvement of social justice and equity are some of the biggest responsibilities bestowed on intellects. Academic experts must always contribute towards the advancement of their nation," Dr. Waheed said.

Speaking about the objectives of MCPS, Dr. Waheed said the institution was established to take initiative in conducting multifaceted researches at both national and international levels.

"Our objective is to establish a platform that assists in the development of important policies for the national development inclusive of statistics and evidence," Dr. Waheed added.

He added that the center aims to provide academic research, expert opinion, and factual information to students, journalists, state bodies, and all the other enthusiastic stakeholders, including locals and foreigners.

Dr. Waheed expressed hope that academic experts in the Maldives would extend their support to the center's cause.
