Former president Mohamed Nasheed says that a message in his name, saying that his political career would end the day President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is re-elected to office, is “fake”.
A screenshot of the message he purportedly sent to a WhatsApp group went viral on Tuesday.
In a post on Twitter, now rebranded ‘X’, Nasheed dismissed the message as fake.
In the post, Nasheed said that he made no such comment.
“President Solih will not win the election, and my political career doesn’t depend on President Solih,” he said.
He alleged that reports were “fake news sponsored by the President’s Office.”
In the viral message, Nasheed purportedly says that he needs support from everyone to win the upcoming presidential election.
“I believe the president will secure an easy win if we are divided. The day the president is re-elected will be the last day of my political career,” reads the message.
Nasheed left the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) which he led, and joined The Democrats – a new party composed of a breakaway faction of MDP loyal to him – on June 21.
