Maldives has reiterated its support to the Palestinian people in their legitimate struggle for self-determination.

The Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid tweeted on Tuesday that Maldives has submitted a written statement to the International Court of Justice, with regard to the request for an advisory opinion on the legal consequences arising from the policies and practices of Israel in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem.

In his tweet, Shahid said that the “government and the people of Maldives will always stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine in their fight for self-determination.”

Maldives has repeatedly expressed deep concern by the disproportionate and excessive use of force by Israel on unarmed civilians, including women and children, in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The country maintains its position that finding long-lasting peace in the Middle East, rests with reaching a two-State solution, with the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, based on the pre-1967 borders, and with East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.
