Faris Maumoon contesting in Presidential Elections

Ahmed Faris Maumoon, former parliamentarian and elder son of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom.

Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) has revealed that the party's leader and MP for Dhiggaru constituency Faris Maumoon will be contesting in the Presidential Elections slated for September.

The party's secretary general Abdul Aleem has confirmed this new to Sun.

While the party is working to run in the election, the Election Commission on May 24th, decided to dissolve the party, for failing to bring up its membership to 3,000.

Aleem said that the party was working on doing all the necessary things for Faris to compete. However, he noted that the only obstacle they face right now was the EC.

Furthermore, he stated that if they are unable to run in the election through the party, they will be competing independently.

MRM has claimed that the decision made by EC to dissolve the party was an "illegal and corrupt". Moreover, they claim that the decision shows the level of corruption within the country, and the government's failure to uphold the law.

EC has denied all of these allegations against them.

On May 29th, the Civil Court, ordered against enforcing EC’s decision to dissolve MRM. EC subsequently appealed to Civil Court to review their decision, to which the court stated they are unable to review their decision.

Therefore, EC cannot enforce its decision to dissolve MRM before a court decision on the matter.
