Faris to again contest for North Machangolhi parliamentary seat

Ahmed Faris Maumoon, the son of former president Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom who contested this year’s presidential election independently, has announced his decision to contest for the North Manchangolhi parliamentary seat in the parliamentary election slated for next year.

Faris announced his decision via a post on social media platformer X, formerly known as Twitter.

In his post, Faris described parliament as the main center in bringing positive changes to the nation.

He also appealed for support from all citizens of the constituency.

Faris had contested for the same seat, on behalf of MRM, during the parliamentary elections held for the ongoing 19^th parliament back in 2019. However, he lost, following which he had sidelined himself from the political arena for a while.

Faris has previously served as Dhiggaru MP in the 18^th parliament, from 2015 to 2019.

Faris, who contested September’s presidential election independently, came sixth from the eight candidates in the first round with 2,979 votes.

He had decided against backing either candidate in the runoff, citing the lack of comprehensive manifestos.

Policies put forth by Faris in the first round had received high praise from the public. His policies mainly focused on reforming the entire system, to reform to the nation. 

He had to contest the election independently after the Elections Commission decided to dissolve MRM, for failure to meet the minimum membership requirement. The decision has been contested at the Civil Court.
