A 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck Indian Ocean region on Sunday evening.
An official from Maldives Metrological Service (Met Office) said the earthquake struck at approximately 7:30pm local time on Sunday evening, stressing there was no threat to Maldives.
The official did not disclose the exact region of Indian Ocean the earthquake struck.
A 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck Indian Ocean on July 1st at 12:29pm local time. The epicenter was located 1,748 kilometers from Male’ City. However, the earthquake posed no threat to Maldives either.
Earthquakes are frequent in areas surrounding Maldives – however, rarely pose any threat to Maldives.
Last year, Maldives felt tremors of a magnitude 5.9 earthquake that hit Indonesia on August 29th.
The earthquake hit 198 kilometers from Padang City, West Sumatra, at 08:29 am Maldivian time.
It is approximately 2,854 kilometers away from Male’ City.
A magnitude 9.1 earthquake in Sumatra in 2004 had created a tsunami, killing over 200,000 people in communities along the surrounding coasts of the Indian Ocean, including Maldives.
