MTD: Adeeb being treated for neurology-related serious and life threatening condition

Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD) has revealed that their leader, former vice president Ahmed Adeeb who was reported hospitalized at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) last night, is being treated for a neurology-related serious and life-threatening condition.

An official from the party confirmed the same to Sun.

In a tweet on Thursday morning, MTD said Adeeb was diagnosed with the condition in question after a prolonged period of solitary confinement from 2015 to 2018 where he was locked up in a cell for 24 hours for three years.

The party stressed the “inhumane’ treatment was against all international conventions and Maldivian laws and expressed deep concern for the party’s leader’s well-being.

Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom’s administration pressed Adeeb with more than 30 charges in connection sale of an island for resort development; one of the many which fell under the MMPRC graft scandal.

He was found guilty and the Criminal Court sentenced him to eight years in prison. However, with Supreme Court’s order on February 1, 2018, the ruling became ineffective, freeing him.

All charges against Adeeb were withdrawn by the state after the current administration assumed office. The execution of a subsequent plea deal, saw seven charges brought against him after combining the transactions and offenses. Adeeb pled guilty in court and was sentenced him 20 years in prison spalled with a fine of MVR 2 million on October 5, 2020.

He was moved to home confinement after his health deteriorated while in prison.

Adeeb has yet to make a fine payment as per the Criminal Court’s judgment. Attorney General’s Office on behalf of the state has initiated a civil suit seeking the payment.
