The Parliament has voted in favor of an amendment to extend the deadline for submission of candidacy for the presidential election.
The government’s bill to amend the Elections Act, sponsored by Kelaa MP Ibrahim Shareef, proposed extending the deadline for submission of presidential candidacy from 10 to 14 days.
The bill passed with the unanimous consensus of 48 MPs on Monday.
Prior to the amendment, candidates for the presidential election slated for September 9 were required to file their candidacy between July 23 to August 3.
The deadline will now be extended once the bill is ratified.
