Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef arrested from opposition protest

Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef Umar captured inside a police vehicle following his arrest from an opposition protest on June 13, 2023.

Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef Umar has been arrested from the protest held by the opposition PPM-PNC coalition on Tuesday night; one of many of their serial demonstrations calling to free the jailed opposition leader, former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom.

At the moment, it is unclear why Adam Shareef, who serves as PNC’s parliamentary group, was arrested.

Many general members belonging to the opposition coalition were also arrested during tonight’s protest.

Opposition coalition, in a statement following the arrests, called for the immediate release of Adam Shareef and other protestors who were arrested from the protest all of a sudden without a warning.

The statement read that Adam Shareef was arrested without warning, while peacefully partaking in the protest.

They also underscored having taken note of the police pepper spraying, breaking the rows of protestors using excessive force and making violent arrests without a prior warning.

Opposition coalition has been holding nightly protests in Male’ City since their leader Yameen was jailed for money laundering and bribery in December 2022.

Protesters have been accused of disrupting and deliberately blocking the traffic in the Artificial Beach area where the party’s headquarters is located.

Five protesters have been charged with obstructing the president’s motorcade back in March.
