Male teacher arrested for molesting multiple male students

A male teacher from a school in a southern Maldivian island has been arrested for molesting multiple male students.

The teacher has been identified as a 38-year-old Maldivian man.

Police said the sexual abuse of multiple children from an island in the southern atolls – Meemu, Faafu, Dhaalu, Thaa and Laamu – was reported to the authority last Saturday following which a 38-year-old Maldivian man was arrested under a court order on Tuesday in connection to the case.

They further detailed that the man has been remanded in police custody for 30 days by the court.

No additional details have been disclosed by the police as they investigate the case further.

Police, citing cases involving minors as serious, said the island has not been disclosed in order to protect the identity of the children. 

The president of the island council where the abuse took place identified the suspect as a Maldivian Quran teacher employed at the island’s school. The president detailed that the teacher is suspected of molesting multiple male students.
