MET forecasts rainy days after heat wave

Maldives Meteorological Service forecasts widespread rain across Maldives the rest of the week, a welcome relief after the recent heat wave.

April and May are the warmest months of the year across Maldives. It is also the transition period between the two monsoons – the Hulhangu Monsoon and the Iruvai Monsoon. The winds weaken significantly and the high humidity stagnates, worsening the warm air temperature and making it feel warmer than it actually is.

MET forecasts heavy rain and thunderstorms will affect central and southern Maldives on Tuesday. Scattered rain is expected in the north.

Winds are expected to blow west and northwesterly at 3 to 13 miles per hour. Winds may gust 35 miles per hour during showers.

Seas are expected to be slight becoming moderate during showers.

The heat wave Maldives had been facing in recent days had been broken by a severe thunderstorm in central Maldives on Monday night. Heavy rain was also reported in AA. Atoll and Addu City.

The heaviest rainfall was recorded in Hulhule’ at 32.6 millimeters. The second heaviest rainfall was recorded in Addu’s Gan at 17.7 millimeters.

Thunderstorms had resulted in flooding in some of the areas of Greater Male’, including the Hulhumale’ Hospital and the Velana International Airport.
