Member of People’s National Congress (PNC), Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef Umar, on Thursday, said the Disciplinary Committee of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) could not investigate him for his remarks expressing gratitude to Parliament Speaker, Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) leader Mohamed Nasheed’s ‘Fikuregge Dhirun’ faction for the assistance rendered to PPM-PNC coalition in the Guraidhoo parliamentary by-election.

Speaking at Monday’s parliamentary sitting – MP Adam Shareef, underscoring MDP’s win in Guraidhoo parliamentary by-election, thanked those who worked to ensure PPM’s win in the by-election including Nasheed’s ‘Fikuregge Dhirun’ faction for their significant efforts in this trajectory.

PPM’s senator, former Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim subsequently filed a complaint with PPM’s Disciplinary Committee requesting to investigate the matter. MP Adam Shareef was accused of lying in the complaint which stressed ‘Fikurrege Dhirun’ faction had not provided any assistance to PPM during the by-election. The complaint further read that MP Adam Shareef’s remarks pave the path for losses to the party and disputes between its members.

When Sun questioned MP Adam Shareef regarding the matter on Thursday during a PPM press conference – he explained that he was a PNC member working in the PPM-PNC coalition. Therewith, he reasoned that PPM’s Disciplinary Committee cannot proceed with an investigation despite the complaint.

MDP won Guraidhoo by-election held on last Thursday with a landslide difference of more than 100 votes. In this regard, MDP’s candidate Ibrahim Shaaz secured 1,346 votes while PPM’s candidate Hussain Riza secured 1,266 votes. Maldives National Party’s (MNP) candidate meanwhile won 136 votes.
