Maldives National Party (MNP) has opened applications for the party’s primary for the vacant Guraidhoo constituency seat in the parliament.
Election Commission (EC) had earlier announced that the by-election will be held on April 15th.
The Guraidhoo seat was left vacant following the death of MP Ibrahim Riza on February 23rd. He passed at the age of 55, in Malaysia, after a two-year-long battle with cancer.
MNP said if a primary is called for, based on the number of applicants, the primary will be held on next Friday.
Ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will also be contesting in the by-election. Four individuals have filed their candidacy to contest in the party’s primary which is scheduled for March 11th.
