A visiting team of medical experts from China’s Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center has treated over 100 patients with eye diseases at the Hulhumale’ Hospital’s Ophthalmology Center.
The team, consisting of four doctors and three nurses, arrived in Maldives last Thursday.
Hulhumale’ Hospital’s Customer Service Director Abdulla Mauroof told Sun that the team has provided consultation to 143 patients with eye diseases including cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and retinal tear.
“The team will continue to provide consultations at the Hulhumale’ Hospital for a considerably long time yet. I don’t know the exact date they are scheduled to leave,” he said.
In addition to providing consultations and performing surgeries, the team will also train the hospital’s medical staff to perform eye surgeries, including cataract, diabetic retinopathy and pterygium.

Chinese ambassador Wang Lixin, who visited the team at the Hulhumale' Hospital on Tuesday, said she was deeply pleased with the team.
“Deeply impressed by their high efficiency in getting all equipment ready for surgery and their hard work in treating patients and training staff in the hospital, which is warmly welcomed,” she said.
The Ophthalmology Center at Hulhumale’ Hospital was opened with the assistance of the Chinese government in 2020. China donated medical equipment, medicine and medical consumables worth over MVR 11.1 million to establish the center.
The team from Zhongshan is visiting the Hulhumale’ Hospital after a break of three years.
