Govt. hints at action against political appointees opposing the president

The government, on Thursday, stated that relevant action will be taken against political appointees that refuse to implement government policies.

Responding to a question posed by a journalist during a press conference at the President’s Office today, Spokesperson Miuvaan Mohamed remarked that everyone was entitled to the right to freedom of expression and support the political ideology preferred by the particular individual.

Nevertheless, Miuvaan stressed political posts are created by the president in order to fulfill the responsibilities of the president’s post, whereas political appointees are individuals appointed to these posts by the president in order to implement government policies.

Therewith, he said if political appointees are against government policies – such cases would be investigated and action would be taken if necessary.

Miuvaan’s remarks come at a time the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has been divided into two factions, with both exchanging heated debates.

While some members of the party support President Solih, others support MDP”s leader Mohamed Nasheed.

During the campaign for MDP’s presidential primary which was held on last Saturday – members of Nasheed faction strongly criticized President Solih and his policies.
