A convict who was checked into Male’ Prison last Sunday to serve his sentence has passed away this morning whilst being treated at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for a high fever.
Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) identified the convict at Mohamed Rasheed, 36, Karankaage, L, Kunahandhoo.
They detailed that Rasheed was first taken to Male’ Prison’s medical centre last night over a high fever, and was later taken to IGMH at approximately 10:00pm as his condition deteriorated.
MCS said that his condition further deteriorated this morning – whereas doctors declared him dead at 10:40am after the administration of CPR.
Mohamed Rasheed is a convict serving a prison sentence of six months and 14 days in connection to a theft. MCS said that when he was checked into prison this Sunday, a medical screen conducted on him showed no indication of any illnesses and that he was not undergoing treatment for any health issues at that time.
They also noted that Rasheed’s death was immediately notified to his family, Inspector of Correctional Services, Maldives Police Service, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives and National Integrity Commission.
