Former president and Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed on Sunday expressed certainty of winning the presidential primary of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Speaking with the press after returning from touring different islands, Nasheed also discussed the matter of choosing a running mate.
He revealed that his choice of a running mate this time around must represent the youth of MDP, as their role within the part also needed expanding.
“I am slowly ageing as well. I believe the role of youth needs to expand more in politics.”
Nasheed went on to note that this individual who must be able to represent the entire country, would be from Addu City.
Even during 2013: his last time contesting in a presidential election, Nasheed chose former Education Minister Dr Musthafa Luthfy as his running mate, who happens to be from Addu.
In addition to this, Nasheed further reiterated his confidence in scoring the primary while responding to a question asked by a journalist, when he said his winning percentage would be over 60.
“I believe (support is there) between 60 and 80 percent.”
He also said that the campaign visits to the islands showed the amount of support for him, and also the disappointment people felt towards the government.
“It would not be hard for me to take this election. There is no doubt.”
A total of 57,255 registered members of the party are eligible to vote in the primary election slated for January 28.
As both Nasheed and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih are contesting and campaigning against each other, the divisions within the largest political party of the nation deepen.
