The Male’ City Council has collected 10 tons of waste left by households in the sides of the roads in Male’ City that the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) failed to collect, according to the council.

Male’ City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that WAMCO workers did not collect waste from households in Male’ on Wednesday night. He said it was WAMCO’s responsibility to collect the waste, and accused the corporation of repeatedly ‘pestering’ the city council.

“The city council has now collected 10 tons of waste. And we also need to pay the gate fee to enter the WAMCO site,” he said.

Muizzu said the city council was determined to do everything necessary to keep Male’ clean.

He appealed for cooperation from the general public.

The city council and WAMCO have engaged in numerous heated exchanges over the last months. City council decided it would personally ensure Male’ remains clean, and established a designated section within the council.

The council has posted an announcement seeking street sweepers.
