As part of his ongoing visit to Gaafu Alifu Atoll – President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih visited Dhaandhoo on Friday, where he met with the island’s residents.
President Solih arrived at Dhaandhoo this evening. It marks the first time in 20 years a Maldivian president is visiting the island. He is accompanied by senior government officials and senior officials of state-owned companies.
Upon his arrival, President Solih was welcomed by a large number of residents at the island’s harbor, following which he met them at Dhaandhoo School.
“In this meeting with Dhaandhoo residents, please share whatever requests you may have for us. There might be some things we do not necessarily agree with. Nevertheless, when in a government, the decisions must be taken by the citizens,” President Solih said.
Twenty-four requests were put forth following this.
The most pertinent request out of the twenty-four was the commencement of a housing project on the island, with a long-term payment mode.
A petition with 124 signatures requesting the same was presented to President Solih.
Other important requests included expediting the development of the bank branch at the island, development of a boatyard, development of an athletic track, linking Nilandhoo and Dhaandhoo via a bridge, laying asphalt on roads, development of an ophthalmological centre, addressing the difficulties of fishermen, development of an international transshipment harbor at Gaafu Alifu Atoll and seeking investors to commence local tourism at Dhaandhoo.
Speaking with the residents, the President assured them of the administration’s commitment to finding amicable solutions and addressing their concerns.
Dhaandhoo Island is President Solih’s first stop on his visit to Gaafu Alifu Atoll. He will travel to the Nilandhoo and Maamendhoo on Saturday.
