Munawar steadfast on continuing ‘Kashunamaadhu’ page despite risk of losing job

Ahmed Munawar, one of the main administrators of ‘Kashunamaadhu’ – a social media page run to publicize details of funerals in the Maldives – expressed refusal to cease operations of the page under any circumstances.

Munawar, on Sunday, revealed he was asked to cease operations of the page that has been in place for 15 years and has gained significantly popularity amongst Maldivians. Munawar who works as a mosque staff at Male’ City Council said that he was asked by City Council’s Secretary General Mujthaba Jaleel to stop running the page.

Speaking to Sun on Monday, Munawar detailed that Mujthaba had asked him to immediately cease operations of the page citing an employee of the Council cannot undertake a responsibility of the Council in an individual capacity.

“He (Mujthaba) said that work cannot be carried out in an individual capacity, while working as a City Council staff,” Munawar had said.

Funeral details of deceased persons in the Maldives have been publicized through ‘Kashunamaadhu’ page for 17 years, non-profit. Over 70,000 people follow the page. Information provided through the page regarding funerals includes the time and place.

“If this has to be done after resigning from my job, I will do so,” Munawar emphasized.

He said that page has resulted in positive changes to funerals in the Maldives – including an increase in attendees compared to before.

Male’ City Council denies making such a demand to any of its staff, on behalf of Mujthaba.
