The elderly burn victim in the fire at GDh. Gadhdhoo on Friday night has passed away.
The 75-year-old man passed away on Saturday night – whilst being treated at GDh. Thinadhoo Memorial Hospital, after doctors lost any hope of recovery.
Gadhdhoo Council member Abdulla Ali confirmed to Sun being informed of the elderly man’s death.
In an earlier statement to Sun, a family member of the man said that doctors had declared no hope for his recovery following kidney failure.
Sun has learned that the fire was a result of a gas leak from the stove.
In this regard, Gadhdhoo Council member Ahmed Shamah said that the fire started on the man’s second attempt to turn on the stove, after failing to do so during his first attempt.
The incident took place at approximately 7:30pm on Friday night. A resident who spoke to Sun from the island on the night of the incident said that the elderly man put out the fire on his own, and also walked himself to the health canter.
As 90 percent of his body was burned at the time he went to the health centre – he was immediately sent off to Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital for further treatment.
An official who spoke to Sun from Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital earlier said that they initiated efforts to transport the man to Male’ City for further treatment, which was unsuccessful.
