NSPA to cover cost of artificial leg for Shavan

National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) on Wednesday announced its decision to cover the cost of an artificial limb for Ahmed Shavan Mohamed who went viral on social media after playing futsal despite having only one complete limb.

 Shavan, is studying in grade one at Hdh. Makunudhoo School was born without the lower half of his right leg.

On Tuesday, he took part in an inter-house futsal competition organized by the school. A video from a match he was playing went viral gaining attention across social media platforms and the press.

 In addition to tall the love and encouragement towards her son, Aishath Visha expressed happiness while speaking with Sun about the good news they received.

She revealed that NSPA has reached out to them via phone, and was informed of their decision to cover the cost of an artificial limb.

Furthermore, the overjoyed mother said that this was done with the combined effort of NSPA, Minister of Education Dr Aishath Ali, and Makunudhoo MP Mohamed Rai.

“I was asked to send documents and then the limb will be provided. All the documents have now been sent.”

Additionally, Visha said that this was something they were really hoping for and were unable to do because of financial constraints.

“This is something we really hoped for. [We] were unable to do financial constraints. Very happy today.”

With artificial limbs, people can lead completely normal lives. There are world-renowned athletes competing at international competitions with artificial limbs.

Visha has earlier said that despite having a disability, their only child displays incredible strength in everything he does.

She said that Shavan takes part in playing sports and other activities held by the school.

“God willing, we will be behind Shavan to support him in anything he hopes to do.”
