Hungarian FM arrives in Maldives on official visit

Hungarian Foreign and Trade Minister Péter Szijjártó has arrived in Maldives on an official visit.

Szijjártó arrived in Maldives on Wednesday, at the invitation of Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid.

Szijjártó and Shahid held official bilateral talks at the Maldivian Foreign Ministry headquarters Wednesday morning, during which they discussed issues of mutual interest.

In a tweet following the talks, Shahid expressed described the talks as “successful”, and expressed confidence of enhanced cooperation between Maldives and Hungary.

“I have no doubt that the existing cooperation between #Maldives and #Hungary will be further strengthened, and our priorities will be further aligned after our discussions today,” he said.

Shahid and Szijjártó are also set to sign three key bilateral agreements, and hold a joint press conference.

Szijjártó is also set to pay a courtesy call on Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Szijjártó’s visit marks the first official visit by a Hungarian Foreign Minister.

“It marks an important milestone in the 47 year long bilateral relationship between the Maldives and Hungary,” said the Foreign Ministry in a statement announcing Szijjártó’s arrival in Maldives.
