Petition lodged with PO over changes to education sector retirement policy

A petition has been lodged with the President’s Office expressing concern over the recent changes to the retirement policy for education sector.

The petition was lodged with signatures from over 500 teachers, most of them from schools in the greater Male’ area, on Sunday.

The petitioners wrote the new pay framework allows six months for education sector workers, including those aged above 55 years, to retire with a monthly pension.

However, the monthly pension is calculated based on previous pay, and not the current one, they wrote.

The petitioners said that while the salary of education sector workers has now been raised in accordance with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s electoral pledge, the pension and some other things aren’t going as promised.

The petitioners also expressed concern that while some workers have served for over 40 years, the service years are converted to 30 years when calculating the pension.

They also argued that the new pay framework should apply to all civil servants, and not some.

The workers leading the petition allege the pay framework is unfair, and said they would fight for fairness.
