Dhiraagu-Fishermen’s Association partner to introduce ‘Young Fisher’s Club’

In a collaborative effort, telecom operator Dhiraagu and Maldives Fishermen’s Association have introduced ‘Young Fisher’s Club’.

Dhiraagu said that the purpose of the club was to introduce and provide basic knowledge and understanding of fishing, marine environment and sustainable practices to students.

The pilot program for students was inaugurated in a special ceremony held at HA. Ihavandhoo School with 52 students from seventh and eighth grades of the school. They include 30 girls and 22 boys. Through this one-year structured program, students will be trained and educated with hands-on practical sessions.

In this regard, all club members s will be introduced to specific areas related to the Maldives fishing industry such as the history of Maldives’ fisheries industry, marine environment, weather, climate change, disaster management, biodiversity, safety at sea and first aid, fisheries management, post-harvest technology, navigation, and communication skills.

Apart from this., students s will also be exposed to life skills such as swimming, snorkeling, leadership, time management and teamwork.

Dhiraagu’s CSR Manager Bishara Hameed said that empowering young people is a key focus area of the telecom company’s CSR strategy.

“We are hopeful that this initiative will allow young people to adapt sustainable practices, technologies and understand the challenges to the marine environment and would help form the right mindset and inspire them to take on further opportunities in this key industry,” she added.

Secretary General of Maldives Fishermen’s Association Abdulla Shakir Mohamed said thanked Dhiraagu for their trust in the program, and supporting the very new initiative in empowering the younger generation into the Maldivian fisheries industry.

“This initiative is a much-needed kick-start that would shape the future of our fisheries industry with a more professional, reliable, and enthusiastic workforce,” he added.
