An all-Maldivian team of doctors have successfully performed PCNL (Percutaneous nephrolithotomy) surgery to remove large kidney stones.
The surgery was performed on Tuesday by Dr. Abdulla Adsar and Dr. Ibrahim Misbah – two doctors from Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH)’s Urology Department.
They were assisted by a team of anesthesiologists and scrub nurses.
IGMH tweeted that it was the first time for a team of all-Maldivian doctors to successfully perform the surgery in Maldives.

PNCL is a minimally-invasive procedure to remove stones from the kidney by a small puncture wound through the skin. The procedure is used to remove stones measuring more than two centimeters – that are too large for other forms of stone treatment such as shock wave lithotripsy or ureteroscopy.
