Tree Top Hospital successfully performs laparoscopic removal of large fibroid

Tree Top Hospital has announced the successful completion of the removal of a large fibroid through laprocscopic myomectomy.

As per the hospital, this is the first time in the Maldives a fibroid of the size (12x10x10) was removed through a laparoscopy.

Laprocscopic myomectomy is the removal of uterine fibroids while leaving the uterus intact – therewith a minimally invasive procedure. However, the surgery requires precision and accuracy in order to not disturb the uterus and to avoid heavy bleeding.

The procedure was performed on a 39-year-old Mauritius woman, Emilie Elegante who was diagnosed with a large uterine fibroid during clinical evaluation following consultation over severe anemia and heavy vaginal bleeding.

A fibroid is a non-cancerous growth that develops in or around the womb.

The operation was carried out by Tree Top Hospital’s Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology Dr. Mahmoud Aboubakur. He was assisted by Consultant in General Surgery Dr. Rishi Kant, taking place as the first assistant, whilst Hospital’s Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology Dr. Preethy Solomon acted as second assistant. A skilled set of OT nurses and Consultant of Anesthesia Dr. Aminath Fiuna provided support as well.

“The laparoscopic myomectomy was performed to remove the large fibroid through only 4 minuscule holes each 5-10mm repair of the uterus in two-layer was completed without any complication and I am happy to share that the patient’s recovery is progressing well,” Dr. Aboubakur explained.

Dr. Aboubakur has over 12 years of experience in the field of obstetrics and gynecology with a special interest in infertility management IUI & IVF hysteroscopy & advanced laparoscopic procedures. He completed his MMBS from Mansoura University, Egypt – where he also completed his Master’s Degree in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Reproductive Medicine and Infertility.

He also completed professional diploma of IVF and infertility and diploma of advanced laparoscopic surgeries.

Dr. Aboubakur has assisted several couples to conceive after experiencing infertility for a long period of time through  evaluation, diagnosis, and management of infertility, including ovulation induction.
