Teacher arrested for abuse of fourth grader jailed pending trial’s outcome

The male school teacher arrested for the sexual abuse of a young boy has been jailed pending the outcome of his trial.

The 29-year-old teacher from Ghaazee School in Hulhumale’ is accused of showing porn to a fourth grader at the school after taking him to a home under the pretense of tutoring him.

Though the case was reported to police on August 15, his arrest didn’t come until August 23, after he was attacked by an angry mob. He was initially presented for his remand hearing before the Hulhumale’ Court, which ordered him to custody of police for five days. The case was later transferred to Criminal Court, which, on Thursday, ordered him to jail pending the outcome of trial.

The attack took place near the Hiyaa flats in Hulhumale’ Phase II and was caught on video.

In the video, a group of people confront the teacher and accused him of showing porn to the young boy and grooming him under the pretense of tutoring him.

They also accuse him of abusing multiple fourth graders at the school. The teacher responds that he abused only one student.

He was made to strip down to his underwear and beaten by the mob, and he cried and pleaded with them to stop.

Following the mob attack, police issued a statement urging people against taking the law into their own hands, warning that people who carry out vigilante attacks will be investigated and taken legal action against.

Police arrested a 36-year-old man on Wednesday, in connection to the mob attack.
