Schools reopen with over 92,000 students for academic new year

Schools across Maldives reopened on Sunday, marking the commencement of a new academic year.

Teaching resumed at 217 schools across Maldives today, with over 92,000 students. Out of these students – 7 ,000 would attend 217 public schools staffed with over 8,300 teachers.

This is the first time the academic year is commencing mid-year in the Maldives since the change from beginning of the year to mid-year in last year.

Although some parents and students expressed discontent over the change – the academic new year of 2022 commenced across the country today with new aims and hopes.

Education Ministry in a previous statement have said that all arrangements necessary for the commencement of a new academic year have been completed ahead.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih took part in a special assembly held to mark the academic new year at Aminiyya School today.

Speaking at the assembly, he urged all students o face new academic year with enthusiasm and fresh resolve.

He also outlined that attending school entails learning, instilling good behavior, and becoming healthy and responsible. He stated that helping one another in school would help to ensure that it is a happy place for all students.

A special assembly to mark the commencement of the academic new year is to be held at Majeedhiyya School this evening. The attendance of Vice President Faisal Naseem is expected at this assembly.
